Calum Macleod SEO Hi, my name is Calum Macleod and I started Big Surf Digital in 2013. I began my career as a web designer before becoming a PPC and SEO consultant.

Getting an increase in traffic for a client is always fun, and getting to that point, is a highly challenging, stressful and rewarding job that I love doing.

What's involved in SEO Glasgow services?

Our SEO process is built around our experience of what works.

Our overall SEO process is the same for each client. Keyword research, on page optimisation, link building and reporting. Within these four categories though, there can be hundreds of different tasks to complete and decisions to make. The list below details some of the possible work that may be carried out during your SEO campaign. The work carried out on your site will depend on the sites' condition.

1. Keyword and competitor research

When we start your campaign keyword research will be carried out to identify the most relevant keywords. The data used will include Google Keyword Planner monthly searches and keywords from competitor sites. Search volumes and competition levels will be analysed to determine the most appropriate keywords to target. To ensure constant ranking increases a wide range of long and short tail keywords may be included in the campaign.

2. On page optimisation

Once we’ve determined which keywords it will be possible to rank highly for we put together a strategy that will include any necessary changes to the code, structure and content of your site. Googles' algorithm uses over 200 signals or ranking factors in determining where a site ranks. We'll address all of the most important of these.

This can include: Optimisation of meta titles and descriptions / Optimisation of on-page content / Source code optimisation / Content duplication and Panda algorithm checks / URL structure optimisation / Internal linking / Page speed optimisation.

3. Off page optimisation

Once the initial optimisation of your site is complete the next stage will be link building to prove your sites worth to search engines. Link building is an important part of any SEO campaign. Essentially Google considers a link from one site to another as a vote of confidence in the value of the recipient page. As such, links are one of the deciding factors in how Google determines which sites are ranked at the top of search listings and should form part of any well-structured SEO campaign.

Link quality is significantly more important than quantity and we will carry out a carefully controlled link building campaign to identify new link building opportunities in order to maximise relevant traffic to the site.

4. Monthly Reporting

We will use Google analytics to measure the performance of your site. The data will be used to improve the effectiveness of the campaign and to increase ROI. Key to any SEO campaign is the ability to measure the impact of changes made to site content and the effect of on-page optimisation and link building. Keyword positions and traffic data will form the basis of monthly reports which will be used to identify campaign progress and inform future campaign decisions. We will include conversion data to show how many of your users convert into sales and prove the worth of the campaign.

How much does SEO Glasgow services cost?

It depends on the competitiveness of market you wish to target and the current strength of your site. Our SEO campaigns start at £400 per month but can cost upwards of £1000 per month depending on the specifics of the site.

SEO is a huge subject with a long history that can seem daunting to newcomers. Rest assured we are experts in SEO so that you don't have to be. Here is some more information about how Google and SEO work to bring you up to speed.

Click here for a brief history of SEO

SEO came about after the first search engines were created, when webmasters realised that being ranked at the top of search results would get a site more traffic. They started a process of reverse engineering the search engines' algorithms to try and understand which website features impacted their sites’ visibility in the search results. Alta Vista and Ask Jeeves were some of the most popular search engines until Google came along. Googles’ patented PageRank algorithm was the backbone of Googles' system. By counting how many links a web page had it would determine the pages popularity and importance in search results allowing it to determine which pages ranked where. The quality of the site giving the link would also be considered.

Google uses web crawlers to crawl the web and index websites allowing its algorithms to sort through, categorise and rank them. Google regularly makes change to its algorithms to improve the quality of its search results. Some of the biggest algorithm changes occurred with the Penguin and Panda algorithms which dramatically cut web spam from its results. Many SEO agencies used to impact the results by buying paid links and generating link networks in order to get their clients to rank in the top results. These techniques were and still are considered to be black hat link building techniques. White hat techniques follow Googles' search quality guidelines that it has set out and is based around creating a website that will attract links naturally.

The Panda algorithm was introduced to reduce the amount of low quality content in search results and ensure that website owners started to focus on improving the content quality on their websites if they wished to rank well in Google. These two algorithms used to run independently of the core Google algorithm but were both combined into it over time. Since then there have been numerous further changes including the introduction of BERT, Rankbrain, Hummingbird, mobile friendly and speed updates. Googles’ algorithms have become incredibly complex and carrying out SEO for websites has changed with it.

Starting a new business?

If you’re looking at starting a new business there’s an important question you may be missing.

Does my new business need Google traffic to grow?

If you need Google traffic in particular some preliminary keyword research could prove useful. We often have people come to us for SEO or PPC once they’re already up and running, or after committing to a particular course of action. It’s often on a timeline that looks like this:

Business idea > create product > get service up and running > create a website > Invest in SEO, PPC.

For some companies that can work great but we also see cases where new businesses are priced out of the market and some keyword research would have been extremely useful at the business idea stage.

The first thing we do when we get a new enquiry in is some keyword research. This can quickly shed light on the following:

  • How many people search in your target area for related keywords.
  • How competitive the market is.
  • How much a click from Google Ads will cost.

After looking into some suitable keywords and analysing the competition we can quickly tell you what kind of monthly budget will be needed to bring in sales, alongside timescales for when this is achievable.

We will also be able to tell you how much a suitable click may cost in Google Ads. We can put together budget estimates to show you how much monthly ad spend you will need to bring in sales. If Google Ads and SEO costs for your market are too expensive it can be useful to know before you’ve invested in other areas of your business. Some data at this stage can also show up other potential options.

If sales from Google traffic are essential to your plan you will also need a website that can convert traffic into leads and sales at a high rate. A good conversion rate can be the difference between a failing business and a successful one. That’s why we use conversion rate optimisation (CRO) techniques on all of our Google Ads campaigns to make them cost effective. CRO combined with a Google Ads campaign can also be used to create a high converting website from scratch.

You know you need SEO, but how do you convince your boss?

SEO can have a huge effect on the success of a business. We know it, you know it, but how do you convince your boss?  We often produce quotes for people who would like to start an SEO campaign, but need to convince their managers first.

Explaining how SEO works can be difficult at the best of times so we’ve set out some of the main benefits of SEO below.

Why is SEO so important? Here’s five reasons.

Benefit 1.  More people will visit your website

Short explanation: It will get more people to visit your site, and they’ll keep coming.

Longer explanation: SEO will get your site onto page one of Google when users search for particular keywords. This will bring in more clicks which will also lead to more enquiries or online sales. Getting to the top of Google for a competitive keyword can bring in a steady stream of quality traffic. Getting to the top for hundreds of keywords can bring in tens of thousands of clicks a month. The potential for most businesses is huge.

Benefit 2. SEO is much more effective than traditional advertising

Short explanation:  SEO will get people to visit your site that actually want what you’re selling.

Longer explanation: Google traffic is one of the highest quality traffic sources you can get. When people need to buy a product or find a service they turn to Google. That is what makes SEO, and PPC so effective. The people carrying out searches are actively looking to buy something, or find specific information. Compare that to print media, web banner advertising or social media where people are more passive and not necessarily looking to buy. Social media in particular often has a very low conversion rate compared to Google traffic.

Benefit 3. An instant trust and credibility boost for your business

Short explanation: Your business will be listed amongst the top competitors in your industry.

Longer explanation:  Increased traffic is the main benefit of SEO but ranking in the top 5 of Google will also help your company’s reputation and foster trust with prospective customers. For example, if your business is ranked amongst John Lewis, Amazon and Argos in the Google search results this can create the impression that you are of a similar size or quality to these big brands. If you’re a small company then appearing on page one can give an instant boost in credibility with customers old and new.

Benefit 4.  SEO allows you to expand into areas where you don’t have a presence

Short explanation: Show up in Google when people search for your services in a particular city or region.

Longer explanation:  SEO can help you to bring in business from all over the country, or different countries around the world. It’s possible to target location based keywords even if your business is not physically in that location.

Benefit 5. Long lasting effects

Short explanation: SEO will continue to bring in traffic even if you end your campaign.

Longer explanation:
The impact of an SEO campaign is not something that will go away when you stop your campaign. The Google rankings that your site achieves and the subsequent rise in traffic will continue for a time. If competitors are actively working to push past your site in the rankings you will be overtaken at some point, but traffic won’t disappear altogether.
